Characterization of the solid residue generated in the detoxification step of sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysate and behavior in agricultural soils Bragantia
Godoi,Isamara; Felipe,Maria das Graças de Almeida; Silva,Débora Danielle Virgínio; Leonel,Lilian Vieira; Costa,Mônica Sarolli Silva de Mendonça; Sene,Luciane.
ABSTRACT Overliming is an effective way of neutralizing and reducing the toxicity of the hydrolysates generated from acidic pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass for ethanol production and others biotechnological products. Overliming generates a solid residue whose inadequate disposal may represent an environmental problem. This work aimed at the chemical characterization of the solid residue generated during the detoxification of the sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysate and evaluation of its behavior in soil. The solid residue was submitted to physicochemical and granulometric analysis and determination of the contents of sugars, metals and toxic compounds (acetic acid, furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural and phenols). The potential of the residue...

Evaluation of grain sorghum hybrids for aluminum tolerance in nutrient solution Agronomy
Menezes, Cicero Beserra de; Lima, Geisiane Matos; Marucci, Rosangela Cristina; Bernardino, Karine Costa; Santos, Crislene Vieira dos; Julio, Marcos Paulo Mingote; Schaffert, Robert Eugene.
Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is one of the most important cereal crops in the world. In Brazil, the acreage of grain sorghum during off-season is quite expansive. Most of this area is the Cerrado, a Brazilian biome that is similar to a Savannah and is characterized by high acidity and soluble aluminum at toxic levels for plants. The aluminum acts as a limiting factor in achieving high yields. The purpose of this work was to phenotype sorghum hybrids for aluminum tolerance. Eighteen hybrids were evaluated in a nutrient solution containing {0} or {27} µM Al3+. The work was carried out in a growth chamber at the Embrapa Maize and Sorghum, from April 4 to May 30, 2014. The lines ATF 13B (susceptible) and ATF 14B (tolerant) were used as check cultivars....

Evaluation of Sikora instead of SMP buffer to estimate the potential acidity of brazilian soils Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Santanna,Maria Alice; Kaminski,João; Rheinheimer,Danilo dos Santos; Toledo,Jaderson dos Anjos; Casali,Carlos Alberto.
Despite the efficiency of the Shoemaker, McLean, Pratt (SMP) buffer method in estimating soil acidity, the presence of p-nitrophenol and potassium chromate in the solution, both hazardous substances, has caused increasing environmental concerns. The purpose of this study was to test Sikora method (Sikora, 2006) as an alternative to the adapted SMP buffer method, generally used to estimate potential acidity of Southern Brazilian soils. For the test, 21 soils in the South and Cerrado regions of Brazil were sampled. (1) The potential acidity values of these soils range from 35.95 to 4.02 cmol c kg-1 of soil, reflecting a wide acidity variation. The Sikora buffer does not mimic the adapted SMP buffer used in Southern Brazil, since the former has a low ability...

Extraction methods and availability of micronutrients for wheat under a no-till system with a surface application of lime Scientia Agricola
Fonseca,Adriel Ferreira da; Caires,Eduardo Fávero; Barth,Gabriel.
Micronutrient availability can be affected by the increase of the soil pH due to surface liming. A field trial was carried out on a loamy, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Hapludox at Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil. The main objective was to evaluate the effects of surface liming and re-liming on the availability of micronutrients [copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn)] for wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cropped under a no-till system. A randomized complete block design was used in a split-plot arrangement. The main plots received surface lime applications (2, 4, and 6 Mg ha-1) in July 1993. In the subplots, surface lime (3 Mg ha-1) was applied again in June 2000. In 2003, before the wheat sowing, soil samples were taken at 0-5, 5-10, and 10-20...

Liming influence on soil chemical properties, nutritional status and yield of alfalfa grown in acid soil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Moreira,Adônis; Fageria,Nand Kumar.
Alfalfa is an important forage crop with high nutritive value, although highly susceptible to soil acidity. Liming is one of the most efficient and prevailing practices to correct soil acidity and improve alfalfa yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate response to liming of alfalfa grown in a greenhouse on a Typic Quartzipsamment soil. The treatments consisted of four lime rates (0, 3.8, 6.6 and 10.3 Mg ha-1) and two cuts. Alfalfa dry matter increased quadratically with increasing lime rates. In general, dry matter yield was maximized by a lime rate of 8.0 Mg ha-1. Except for the control, the dry matter nutrient contents in the treatments were adequate. The positive linear correlation between root and nodule dry matter with lime rates indicated...

Morphological adaptations of signal grass in response to liming and cutting severities Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Pereira,Lilian Elgalise Techio; Passos,Bruna Scalia de Araújo; Herling,Valdo Rodrigues; Luz,Pedro Henrique de Cerqueira; Avanzi,Junior Cesar.
ABSTRACT Changes in morphological composition and in the plant population were evaluated during late spring, summer and autumn, in swards of Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk in response to liming (C0.0, without liming; C0.7, limestone amount equivalent to 0.7 ton ha-1; and C1.0, limestone amount equivalent to 1.0 ton ha-1), which were subjected to severe or lenient cutting (40 or 60% of the pre-cutting height, respectively). Increased limestone doses did not result in higher herbage mass (HM), leaf area index (LAI) or proportion of leaves (%L) in the pre-harvest. However, lower proportion of dead material was registered in C0.7 treatment. The treatments C0.0 e C0.7 had higher %L during late spring and summer when associated to severe cutting regimes...

Protective effect of divalent cations against aluminum toxicity in soybean Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Silva,Ivo Ribeiro da; Corrêa,Tarcísio Fernando Côrtes; Novais,Roberto Ferreira; Gebrim,Fabrício de Oliveira; Nunes,Flancer Novais; Silva,Eulene Francisco da; Smyth,Thomas Jot.
A large proportion of soybean fields in Brazil are currently cultivated in the Cerrado region, where the area planted with this crop is growing considerably every year. Soybean cultivation in acid soils is also increasing worldwide. Since the levels of toxic aluminum (Al) in these acid soils is usually high it is important to understand how cations can reduce Al rhizotoxicity in soybean. In the present study we evaluated the ameliorative effect of nine divalent cations (Ca, Mg, Mn, Sr, Sn, Cu, Zn, Co and Ba) in solution culture on Al rhizotoxicity in soybean. The growth benefit of Ca and Mg to plants in an acid Inceptisol was also evaluated. In this experiment soil exchangeable Ca:Mg ratios were adjusted to reach 10 and 60 % base saturation, controlled by...
